The National Statistics Harmonisation Steering Group (the Steering Group) will lead the strategic direction of Government Statistical Service (GSS) harmonisation activity. Harmonisation means taking steps to ensure that statistics produced by different organisations can be compared to each other.
The steering group will aim to raise the profile and effectiveness of the National Statistics Harmonisation Group‘s (NSHG) work. The group will sit between the NSHG and the Statistical Policy and Standards Committee (SPSC) in the GSS governance structure.
The strategic direction of the Steering Group is to enable users to make informed decisions in relation to the comparability of data sources/statistics, within and across themes, by improving comparability through the development and use of harmonised principles and standards.
The role and objectives of the Steering Group are detailed in the National Statistics Harmonisation Steering Group Strategy Paper which can be found here.
This group is chaired by the Deputy Director for Life Events and Population Sources Division within the Office for National Statistics. The membership is made up of a small group of statisticians from across government. The Terms of Reference can be found here.
