Pre-release Access to Official Statistics

The Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 includes a power to make secondary legislation that sets rules for access to official statistics before they are published (pre-release access). This power has been used by the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Scottish Ministers, Welsh Ministers and the Department of Finance and Personnel for Northern Ireland in their respective parliaments to determine the principles and rules for pre-release access.

These orders are an important part of the Code of Practice for Official Statistics, and the UK Statistics Authority assess official statistics for compliance with them.  Breaches of the Pre-Release Access Orders are regarded as breaches of the Code and should be reported to the National Statistician in accordance with guidance.
