Level 5 in Statistics and Analysis (RSS Higher replacement)

The Learning Academy is offering two alternative options to the Level 5 in Statistics and Analysis, which was in the past the replacement for the Royal Statistical Society Higher Certificate.

1.Professional Certificate in Practical Statistics (Open University – distance learning)

Starting in February 2018, this distance learning course with tutor support (online and face-to-face contact), has four 30-credit modules studied across 2 years (can be extended up to 7 years). You can study one or several modules: However, to gain accreditation you will need to attend and pass all 4 modules:

  • Introducing Statistics
  • Analysing data
  • Practical modern statistics
  • Linear statistical modelling

Cost per module: Costs are depending on geographical location where you live, not work and there may be a increase in cost if you take the modules in the 2018/19 academic year:

  • England: £1,432 per module
  • Wales: £479 per module
  • Scotland: £479 per module
  • Northern Ireland: £479 per module

Funding: your business area/division will be required to fund your attendance on this course.

Entry to the Statistical Profession: you must study and pass all 4 modules if you are also interested in joining the Statistical Profession.

2.Continued Professional Development – Higher Level course – S3Ri Distance Learning Programme (University of Southampton – distance learning)

This non-accredited course provides the continued delivery of the old RSS Higher modules through Southampton’s Continued Professional Development programme. It is especially aimed at those who had not finished their studies under the old RSS programme but will also be open to new students for the next 2 years.

The course is delivered via personal study and you will have access to a tutor mostly via email (face-to-face meetings are not usually part of this course). You will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion if you pass a module via the coursework/homework but please note that the course is not accredited.

There are 8 modules available at a cost of £175 per module:

  • Module 1- Data collection and interpretation
  • Module 2 – Probability models
  • Module 3 – Basic statistical methods
  • Module 4 – Linear models
  • Module 5 – Further probability and inference
  • Module 6 – Further applications of statistics
  • Module 7 – Time series and index numbers
  • Module 8 – Survey sampling and estimation

Funding: your business area/division will be required to fund your attendance on this course.

Entry to the Statistical Profession: you must study and pass 6 modules if you are also interested in joining the Statistical Profession.
