When completing analysis, you will need to be able to develop a solid understanding of the process of primary data collections, recommending sample sizes, developing inferences, testing hypotheses and making recommendations based on your analysis. You will need an understanding of data management and data quality control, as well as the ability to ensure those working with you take a methodical approach to working with complex data on tight timescales.
When the analysis is complete, you will need to be able to articulate complex information and its strengths and weaknesses, including uncertainty, to your line manager and inspection leads. It is important that all findings are communicated accurately and effectively to a wide audience, in particular the public.
You will be supporting several projects simultaneously, and therefore you should have a proactive attitude, strong organisational skills, and be able to work effectively under pressure when there are competing priorities.
Key Responsibilities are likely to include:
- Designing and administering the collection of relevant bespoke data from police forces and/or fire and rescue services to support inspection programmes and ongoing monitoring, liaising with police forces and/or fire and rescue services as part of the collection process.
- Applying the principles of the Statistics Authority’s Code of Practice for Statistics to assess and improve the quality of the data collected.
- Sourcing, researching and analysing data held by other organisations such as the Home Office and Office for National Statistics, to improve efficiency of requests
- Supporting HMICFRS inspection and monitoring activity.
- Interpret and apply HMICFRS’ knowledge, information and data strategy to data management activities, including working with internal and external systems to develop a smooth process for data transfer.
- Producing ad-hoc and routine reports on the data analysis undertaken, including visualisations to aid understanding.
- Representing HMICFRS at meetings with external stakeholders at working level (including the Home Office and Office for National Statistics, as well as the police service and/or fire and rescue service).
- Ensuring that all performance data (and performance analysis) are subject to robust quality assurance before it is shared within and beyond the team.
