The past few years have underlined the importance of financial markets for the rest of the economy; we ignore them at our peril. Yet under increasing globalisation and continuing innovation, financial markets have become increasingly complex and accounting for financial transactions correspondingly complicated. Technological advances have also given new tools to tackle this task. Harnessing big data and administrative information opens up possibilities only recently available.
This important seminar, to be held at The Cavendish Conference Centre, London on Thursday 20 September, will cover these issues. Organised jointly by the Society of Professional Economists (SPE), the Royal Economic Society (RES), the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), speakers will be David Matthews (ONS), Werner Bier (European Central Bank) and Oliver Burrows (Bank of England). The ONS and the ECB will set out their actions to compile enhanced financial accounts using new techniques. The Bank of England will speak about the importance and uses of such accounts for macroeconomic management and financial stability.
Attendees will have the opportunity to question these experts and debate the issues that arise.
