Open data

Open data is data that can be freely accessed, used, re-used and redistributed by anyone. The principle of making data simple to access and re-use is consistent with the principles of the Code of Practice for Official Statistics. Opening up data can increase its public value.

Below you can find policy and guidance, open data e-learning, examples of good practice on making data open and advice on where to go to make your data open.

The Government Statistical Service has developed an online training course to help explain the principles and practicalities of open data. It includes a series of case studies to show you how open data is used and the benefits that it brings. It is available from Civil Service Learning.
