National Statistician

John Pullinger is the National Statistician and took up post on 1 July 2014. The National Statistician is the UK Statistics Authority’s and the Government’s principal adviser on official statistics. The National Statistician is the Head of the Government Statistical Service (GSS) and, as the Authority’s Chief Executive and Permanent Secretary, is a member of the Board of the UK Statistics Authority. More information is available about John’s career prior to his appointment and his roles and responsibilities. You can get the latest from John by reading his blog page.

The National Statistician is supported by three Deputy National Statisticians:

  • Jonathan Athow – the Deputy National Statistician for Economic Statistics (from 1 June 2015)
  • Heather Savory – the Deputy National Statistician for Data Capability
  • Glen Watson – the Deputy National Statistician for Population and Public Policy

The National Statistician and the three Deputy National Statisticians form the National Statistics Leadership Team. They work collectively to deliver the Better Statistics, Better Decisions strategy.

Although each Deputy National Statistician has their own focus of responsibility, they work together with the National Statistician to ensure they are at the tables where decisions are made.

There are two teams that offer support and advice to those working within the GSS. The Central Policy Secretariat’s job is to help staff across the GSS to work together with senior leaders to achieve our shared priorities. The GSS Professional Support Team provides information and advice on statistical and data science capability.

The UK Statistics Authority’s website provides information on the National Statistician’s Reports, Reviews, Guidance and Advisory Committees.
