23rd GSS Methodology Symposium

Charles Lound, organiser of the 23rd GSS Methodology Symposium ‘Better Statistics, Better Decisions through Innovation’, summarises the events of the day, and thanks all those involved in making the symposium a great success!

Campion award for excellence in official statistics

  Congratulations to Defra who won the 2018 Campion award for excellence in official statistics. Their Future Farming and Environment Evidence Compendium pack. The judging panel thought it showed excellent use of administrative data with a direct impact on policy and communication with users.

Laura Davies, the new Analysis Function Work Programme and Engagement lead, gives the latest on its’ progress, and what the immediate priorities are. The Analysis Function strategy was launched at the beginning of June and now the work to integrate analysis into all facets of government begins.


Statistical Quality Advisor – Fast Stream opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 experienced fast streamers to join the GSS Quality Centre, part of a wider team supporting the GSS to improve Government Statistics. These posts will provide you strategic insight across the whole of government statistics, build your knowledge of what best practice looks like and develop your consultancy skills.

Exciting new roles now available across the GSS

A number of new vacancies are now available, including Senior Statistician roles at MHCLG and OFCOM.

Director, Data and Analysis at MoJ

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) have a vacancy for a Director for Data and Analysis, providing strategic leadership of the analytic/data function and working to make MoJ a ‘data driven’ department.



GSS Conference 2018

 The deadline for completing the GSS Conference attendee registration form is 31st July (including speakers and presenters). The form asks for your preferences for the parallel sessions, taking just 5 minutes to complete and ensuring the conference experience is tailored to you.



ONS, in partnership with Datakind UK and the University of Southampton is running a DataDive – a hackathon-style event that partners charities with data scientists, statisticians, analysts and developers to use data to gain insight into their programs and the communities they serve. The event is free and open to all GSS colleagues. Book your place now!


Learning and Development

MSc modules in Data Analytics in Government

The Data Science Campus and the ONS Learning Academy invite you to apply for a module from the MSc in Data Analytics for Government (MDataGov) in 2018/2019.

Applications for the 2018-2019 academic year are open for all three MDataGov providers: the University of Southampton, University College London and Oxford Brookes University.

The Learning Academy have arranged a number of Introduction to R and Python for Analytics sessionsThese courses are open to GSS staff and provided by Mango solutions.
