Launch of the Government Statistical Service (GSS) Quality and Harmonisation Strategies

The GSS Quality Strategy and GSS Harmonisation Strategy were launched today.

The strategies were developed by the Best Practice and Impact (BPI) division through consultation with key stakeholders from across the GSS. They are future-focussed and set direction on the quality, coherence and comparability of statistics.

The strategies have been designed to be accessible for anyone to read, from desk analysts through to management. They are not only for statisticians.  Everyone who works on the production and dissemination of government statistics is part of the GSS and included in the strategies.

The Better Statistics, Better Decisions Strategy states that statistics should enable sound policy decisions and provide a firm evidence base for decision making both in and out of government. Improving the quality and harmonisation of statistics across the GSS will also build trust in the statistics and in us as producers.

The new strategies set out a cross-government approach to quality and harmonisation.  In BPI, we will build a picture of the current state of work on quality and harmonisation.  We will collate case studies and examples of best practice from across government. By sharing these, we will help to foster a government statistical system that works together to produce high quality statistics.
