Updated Sexual Orientation Guidance

After consulting with a range of stakeholders and topic experts, it is recommended that all outputs derived from the sexual identity harmonised question should be labelled as sexual orientation. A footnote explaining why it is labelled as ‘sexual orientation’ and not ‘sexual identity’ should accompany all outputs.

By recommending that all outputs are labelled as ‘sexual orientation’ it will make it in line with the protected characteristic defined in the Equality Act 2010 (sexual orientation).

This change will also ensure it is more in line with various public-sector organisations including the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and NHS England.
