User guide for the Public Service Data Dashboards

What are the dashboards?

The dashboards are intended to help you easily access a broad spectrum of published data available for public services in one place.

The dashboards include:

  • health statistics
  • education statistics
  • work and pensions statistics

Each dashboard is divided into four main sections:

  • Spend
    • Description: An overview of the resource needed to deliver the inputs for that department.
    • Purpose: To show an overview (where available) of the available Total Managed Expenditure (TME), Departmental Expenditure Limits (DEL), and Annually Managed Expenditure (AME).
  • Inputs
    • Description: An overview of what is ‘bought’ by each department using the Spend.
    • Purpose: To show the change over time (and any available breakdowns) of the department’s inputs.
  • Outputs
    • Description: An overview of what is produced or delivered by the Inputs.
    • Purpose: To show the change over time (and any available breakdowns) of the department’s outputs.
  • Outcomes
    • Description: An overview of the main outcomes identified as part of the single departmental plan.
    • Purpose: To show the change over time (and any available breakdowns or demographic differences) of the department’s outcomes.

For further definitions, go to “What are spend, inputs, outputs and outcomes?”

Each dashboard also has its own specific content. To find out more, go to “What is different about each dashboard?”

What is spend, inputs, outputs and outcomes?

Inputs, outputs and outcomes can be defined in various ways. The definitions adhered to during the production of these dashboards can be found and supported in several sources, such as Choosing the Right Fabric: A Framework for Performance Information which outlines each as the following:

  • inputs are the resources that contribute to production and delivery, such as labour, physical assets and IT systems.
  • outputs are the final products, or goods and services produced by the organisation for delivery to the customer.
  • outcomes are the impacts or consequences of the activities. This is normally what an organisation is trying to achieve.

Spend is typically defined as:

  • The amount of money used to “buy” the inputs.
