Analytic data scientist (SEO)
The Department for International Trade has overall responsibility for developing, coordinating and delivering a new trade and investment policy for the UK, including preparing for and then negotiating Free Trade Agreements and market access deals with non-EU countries, and promoting UK trade and investment across the world.
Trade and investment are both high profile areas and attract much media, government and parliamentary interest.
The trade statistics function is led by the Chief Statistician. You will be part of the Analytic Data Science team which will make full use of datasets held both inside and outside the department to produce statistical and analysis products that inform trade policy and negotiations. This will include the wide range of trade data available from ONS and HMRC and international and open source data. You will lead analytical data science projects, applying techniques to trade, investment, and a wide range of government and open data to produce readily accessible insights for the department. Your work will focus mainly on data science for trade policy and negotiations.
This is a challenging role and you will need to have a real enthusiasm for data science, statistics and the impact unlocking data can have.
Training will be provided in trade statistics and wider trade policy through the Diplomatic Academy and your development in trade statistics will be supported by your senior trade statistician and data science colleagues. The role will provide excellent development and you will gain the experience of developing a vital statistical function in a new department.
