ONS is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and the recognised national statistical institute of the UK.
The Wales Audit Office (WAO) is the organisation which supports the Auditor General as the public sector watchdog for Wales.

As a Data Analytics apprentice your primary role will be to collect, organize and study data to provide business insight. A typical day will involve managing, cleansing, abstracting and aggregating data, alongside conducting a range of analytical studies on those data.

You will be expected to document and report the results of data analysis activities, making recommendations to improve business performance. This will be part of your job and will also demonstrate your competence towards your Level 4 Data Analytic apprenticeship assessment. You will develop a good understanding of data structures, database systems and procedures and the range of analytical tools used to undertake a range of different analyses.

In the different business areas of ONS, Data Science Campus and the Wales Audit Office you will be tasked with undertaking the following work:
  • Identifying, collecting and migrating data to/from a range of systems;
  • Manipulating and linking different data sets as required;
  • Assisting with data quality checking and cleansing;
  • Applying the tools and techniques for data analysis visualization and presentation;
  • Summarising and present the results of data analysis to a range of customers making recommendations;
  • Interpreting and applying the organization’s data and information security standards, policies and procedures to data;
  • Performing database queries across multiple tables to extract data for analysis;
  • Performing routine statistical analysis and ad-hoc queries which may include the production of reports;
  • Using a range of analytical techniques such as data mining, time series, forecasting and modelling techniques to –
    identify and predict trends and patterns in data;
  • Assisting with data quality checking and cleansing;
  • Working with the organization’s data architecture
