Senior Analytical Officers play a crucial role in the effective running of Data and Insight and in leading the team in which they work. They provide vital support to their team leader by taking a wide range of responsibilities. Some will have more focus on technical skills whilst some will specialise more in delivering insightful analysis, but all will cover a wide range of tasks.

Senior Analytical Officers specialise in one remit area but may be required to develop knowledge of other remit areas to enable flexible cross-team working. Most have line management responsibilities, leading and managing a small team to deliver a range of outputs. They will lead substantial projects and other pieces of work. They develop expertise in the data for their area and use that expertise to make an impact.

Some Senior Analytical Officers will develop some technical expertise in the systems used to manage our data. For example, they will develop the technical skills to extract it from the Data Warehouse and will specify automated checks to ensure the quality of those extracts. Others will develop an expertise in analysis and insight, analysing data appropriately and applying a thorough understanding of the policy and the wider context for their remit to deliver high quality outputs which are disseminated and have impact across Ofsted.

The post holder will have a wide range of responsibilities, which may include :

  • managing and producing pre-inspection data products,
  • managing the production of official statistics about their remit
  • contributing analysis to and quality assuring Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector (HMCI) Annual Report
  • producing briefings for HMCI or directors both proactively and as requested
  • delivering responses to Freedom of Information requests, official correspondence
  • Parliamentary Questions and other ad hoc requests from within Ofsted

They may provide support for Ofsted’s research and evaluation programme. They take responsibility for ensuring their outputs, and those of their team, are accurate, timely and relevant.

The post holder is expected to build strong relationships across Data and Insight and across the organisation to ensure their work is informed by and informs policy development.
